Kalutara town is located 37km south of Colombo and was once an important spice-trading centre. The Portuguese, Dutch and British controlled it at different times in history. Today it is renowned for its fine basketware and for the best mangosteen fruit on the island.
Kalutara obtained its name from the Kalu Ganga or "Black River". South of the Kalutara Bridge is the Kalutara Temple, which was built in the 1960s. Motorists frequently stop at the shrine and bo tree on the main road to say a prayer and make offerings to ensure a safe journey.| Destination | Distance |
