Spread out over 25 acres of lush greenery and perfectly placed in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka is where one would encounter one of the most prominent places to see in Kandy Sri Lanka. Established in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is reputed as being a reserve that possesses the world’s largest herd of captive elephants. Pinnawala serves as a refuge for orphaned and injured elephants while affording both locals and tourists the opportunity to witness these majestic creatures.

Watch as the ‘mahouts’ or caretakers prepare the animals for their daily bath in the waters of the Maya Oya or take some time to witness the volunteers bottle feeding the elephant calves which is one of the most endearing sights to be witnessed at the orphanage. The orphanage is also in the midst of carrying out its own breeding programme where the animals are later handed over to private owners and temples respectively.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage can easily be accessed from our hotel as guests can take pleasure in half day tour packages that would offer one plenty of time to explore such a natural reserve.
