ENDEMIC LIFE FLOURISHES HERE

From forest birds and primates to butterflies and towering rainforest trees, Sinharaja supports an extraordinary concentration of species found nowhere else on Earth. More than 830 endemic floral and faunal species have been recorded within the wider landscape, including at least 139 endemic plant species associated with its primary and secondary forest habitats. Endemism is also notably high among mammals, birds and butterflies. Species such as the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey and Tree Nymph butterfly reflect the ecological uniqueness of the region and the importance of protecting habitats that support such restricted and vulnerable forms of life.
