The Forest Floor

FOREST FLOOR AND FRESHWATER WORLDS

Some of Sinharaja’s most important ecological activity takes place at ground level and beneath the surface of its streams. Leaf litter, fallen logs, moist soils and shaded waterways support freshwater fish, frogs, land snails, slugs, insects, fungi and other small organisms. Though easily overlooked, these species contribute to decomposition, nutrient cycling, soil health and aquatic food webs. This section explores the smaller habitats of the rainforest and reveals how life on the forest floor and in freshwater systems helps sustain the wider ecosystem.
